Fruehling's fantastic Aussie debut

Import Fruehling made a winning start to his Australian career

He has a long way to go to reach the heights of half-brother Glass Harmonium, but English import Fruehling got his Australian career off to the perfect start with a win in the $30,000 Perri Cutten Maiden Plate at Sportingbet Park (Sandown).

The four-year-old son of Azamour, who is also out of the dam of last year's Mackinnon Stakes winner, notched his first win at start number four when unleashed a powerful finish in the 1600-metre event.

The performance made an impression on new trainer Anthony Freedman, who didn't welcome the entire into his Rye stable until early this year.

“He only arrived probably only 10 weeks ago, so he's done a good job to acclimate and settle in,” Freedman said.

“He's a half to Glass Harmonium, who's worked here, and that pointed us in that direction that the family might work here.”

Fruehling and jockey Daniel Moor were slowly away from the inside barrier, but mustered to take up a midfield position on the fence before accelerating swiftly in the straight to put his rivals away.

A $6 chance, Fruehling scored by a length from Rock Musician ($4.80) with $3.70 favourite King And I a head away third.

“Obviously he was a touch slowly away, he was a bit rusty and he floated midrace, but when I really asked him to go between horses he lengthened he really well,” Moor said. “I think he's got a future over ground.”

Fruehling's win completed a running double for Moor and Freedman, who provided the first and third placegetters in the $30,000 Schweppes 2YO Handicap (1400m).

Freedman's pair didn't come in the way punters had hoped, with $11 Boban getting home at $11 with well-backed $2.80 favourite Beaumaris in third spot. Splitting them was the Pat Carey-trained Right To Roam.

The double continued Freedman's stunning run at Sportingbet Park this season. While his final two runners for the day, Iridescente and Annario both finished second, his record sits at 16 wins from 61 starts at a strike rate of 26.22%
