This year, Caulfield will see the running of the 130th The Age Caulfield Guineas, the 65th Schweppes Thousand Guineas and the 133rd edition of the Melbourne Racing Club’s signature event, the BMW Caulfield Cup.
In 2006, BMW commenced a sponsorship association with the Melbourne Racing Club’s premier event – the Caulfield Cup – a race generally acknowledged as the most exacting 2400 metre handicap south of the equator.
This year’s BMW Caulfield Cup carries total prize money including trophies of $2,555,000 promises to be one of the major highlights of the three-day extravaganza at Caulfield.
First run in 1879, there were two Caulfield Cups held in 1881 when the race was moved from the Autumn to the Spring and now sits as one of the most sought after prizes in Australian Thoroughbred racing during the Spring.
The Age Caulfield Guineas has a rich history and that is set to continue for decades to come.
The vivid memories of last years The Age Caulfield Guineas encapsulates the true essence of racing excitement. The uniquely named Starspangledbanner stormed to victory in the three-year-old classic of Australasia to the raucous cheers of tens of euphoric owners in the winners enclosure.
The win of Starspangledbanner, who has gone on to international glory since, will be remembered as fondly as that of Whobegotyou in 2008, Weekend Hussler in 2007, the mircaculous win of God’s Own in 2005 and the stirring win of the people’s horse, Lonhro, in 2001.
The Age Caulfield Guineas is known as a ‘stallion-making race’ and there have been many horses to franc that statement, none more emphatically than the great Redoute’s Choice. Redoute’s Choice won the Caulfield Guineas in 1999 and since that time has become Australia’s greatest stallion.
History is made at Caulfield every Spring – Be Here As It Happens.
