Punters voted with their feet in support of twilight racing today as more than 5,000 patrons converged on Caulfield Racecourse.
Family fun was the order of the day off the turf, but the true highlights of the meeting were inarguably on it.
Southern Speed’s return to the scene of her most famous win was a triumphant one – the reigning BMW Caulfield Cup champion overcoming a 60kg impost to storm to victory in the Listed $100,000 John Dillon Stakes under Craig Williams.
The Dillon was the last of four events at Stakes level on the Caulfield card, following the Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Preview (Colts & Geldings), taken out by The Travelling Man; its equivalent for fillies, won by Malasun; and the Sportingbet Zeditave Stakes, which went to Instinction.
Malasun’s victory in the fillies’ Preview makes her the sole remaining two year-old in the running for the $1 million bonus attached to the Patinack Farm Blue Diamond series. Terms and conditions of the series can be viewed here: http://www.melbourneracingclub.net.au/uploads/media_items/2012-patinack-farm-blue-diamond-terms-conditions.original.pdf.
As a result, Sportingbet Australia has wound Malasun’s price to win the $1 million Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Stakes into 7.50, making her third favourite behind Jimando (5.50) and Raceway (6.50).
A three-day, three-venue racing bonanza for the Melbourne Racing Club continues at Mornington tomorrow, followed by a meeting on Saturday at Sportingbet Park.
Saturday’s meeting features the $100,000 final of the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship, currently led by Wealthy Lad.
